Bewick woodcut (1)

"Children flying a kite", wood engraving by Thomas Bewick (1753–1828).

The original is 4.4 x 3 cm. Here it is at full size (but low screen resolution)

Thomas Bewick was born in Northumberland and worked most of his life in Newcastle. He established wood engraving as an art in England. He worked mainly on box wood across the grain. This gave him very tough originals, but of limited size. He is best known for his outstandingly natural portrayals of birds, animals, and scenes of rural life in children's books and a set of natural history books.
